What are promotional gifts? Promotional items or promotional products are articles of merchandise that are used in marketing and communication programs. They are usually printed with a companys name, logo or slogan, and given away at trade shows, conferences, and as part of marketing campaigns. Sometimes they can be simply given to customers when they buy a particular product or service.

The first promotional goods were probably those related to political campaigns. Button badges became a very popular way of spreading the word about a particular campaign. They were a walking advertisement for the politician or campaign and the public were very happy to wear symbols of their allegiances on their chests!

Why use promotional items? Ive been the recipient of many promotional goods during my business life and at Lighthouse Printing and Promotional Goods here in Cardiff in South Wales we have also supllied a great many so I think I've been able to see how useful they can be from both perspectives. As I see it, the main benefits of promotional items as marketing tools, are as follows:

Low cost Button badges, key fobs, pens and pencils are examples of promotional goods that can be produced at very small per item costs - especially when run in large quantities.

Easily focused Promotional items can be used in very tightly focused campaigns to eliminate the waste that comes with a broader campaign (radio or newspaper ads, for example). Decision makers from particular companies could be targeted for example with a postal campaign supplying a relatively high value item - (a leather desk diary, silver business card holder or clock, for example) - which keep your company or organisations name constantly on their desk.

Long-lasting Many types of marketing are very much here today and gone tomorrow. The effects of a billboard ad. or flier campaign are very fleeting whereas some promotional items can literally be used for years.

Value Many campaigns are very much seen by the consumer as attempts to sell them something, whereas promotional products can be viewed much more as gifts - hence making the consumer a much warmer feeling towards the giver and, hopefully, more likely to make a purchase.

Ease of Access Company buyers and decision makers are very busy people and are constantly sent huge amounts full of literature and email from companies attempting to sell their wares. It is sometimes a great chore for them to go methodically through the information sent by potential suppliers. Sometimes its easier for them to look at the diary, pen, desk-pad, mouse-mat or whatever it happens to be, to find your phone number or web address, than spend a lot of time chasing up the details of other suppliers.

I can see the importance of promotional items, but so many are just "throw-aways" that I will not use, thus, the purpose is lost. One of my favorite pens is a promotional item. It makes me want to keep in touch with the company just so I can get a new one when this one dries out.
